Here are some of the restaurants we actually visited in the Tokyo area and the breakfast menus (morning menus) we ate there!

【Sakuragicho】Have an out-of-this-world soup morning at Soup Dining NOUMU

Hearing that a soup dining establishment in Yokohama was offering an out-of-this-world soup morning, we paid a visit to Restaurant NOUMU, attached to the Edit Hotel in Sakuragicho.

Visit the restaurant

It is about a 5-minute walk from Sakuragi-cho Station on the JR Keihin Tohoku Line/Yokohama Municipal Subway Blue Line, across the Oooka River. We arrived around 8:35, which is the opening time plus 35 minutes. There were two groups in the restaurant at the time of our arrival, and we were shown around in no time.
The door is open and looks like an entrance in a prominent place under the footbridge, but I think this is a window (see photo on the left).
The entrance is on the right side of the Edit Hotel entrance (photo on the right).

This is the menu that was offered that day. It is really easy to understand with three different soups.

  • Morning set: ¥1,650

    • Choose soup and drink from the following (can also be ordered separately)
    • Includes bread and salad
  • Soup

    • NOUMU (Clam Chowder Potage): ¥650
    • Grilled tomato and savory vegetable soup: ¥550
    • Pumpkin and carrot putage: ¥600
  • Beverages

    • Coffee (hot or iced): ¥450
    • Jasmine Flower Green Tea (hot/iced): ¥450
    • 100% fruit juice (mandarin orange juice): ¥600
    • Homemade Ginger Ale: ¥500
    • Milk (hot or iced): ¥450

Actual meal

When I asked the waitress which one was the best, she gave me a simple answer, "Usually it's the NOUMU.
Without hesitation, I decided to order the NOUMU soup.

  • Morning set: 1,650 yen
    • NOUMU
    • Salad
    • Jasmine flower green tea (hot)


Detailed impressions are below.

  • NOUMU.

    • It is a potage of clam chowder and a soup with bacon🥓 milk foam🍼 on top.
    • It is different from the clam chowder I know. The seafood, carrots, potatoes, and other ingredients are a complete paste, with no solids and no sweetness from the cream. The smokiness that seems to come from the bacon and the salty taste of the soup as a whole are more noticeable.
    • When I actually had it, the distinct flavor woke me up. The potage gently soaked into my stomach, which was weakened by lack of sleep.
    • It would be a perfect meal before going out in the blazing sun today. (Note: The high temperature on this day was 34.6℃ / clear skies with direct sunlight).
  • Salad

    • Salad of prosciutto, carrots, and salad greens. Caesar dressing on top. It is crunchy and tasty.
  • Jasmine Flower Green Tea (hot)

    • A stylish green tea with the aroma of jasmine. Delicious ☕.

The Edit Hotel was so stylish that you could tell from the entrance. The interior of the restaurant NOUMU is very modern and inviting.
The morning menu includes three kinds of soup, which is simple and helpful. I was able to order without hesitation.
The NOUMU we had this time is what is called "a taste you will never get tired of" with its hard-edged seasoning that does not aim to be flashy. I thought it would be fine for guests staying at the hotel to eat it every morning.

The homemade ginger ale on the drink menu is a hidden favorite, I found out later. I would definitely like to try it next time I visit the hotel.

Note

The restaurant was a rickety place at the time I visited from 8:35am, but by 9:00am, the seats were filling up quite well.
If you want to play it safe, you might want to come earlier in the day.
