Here are some of the restaurants we actually visited in the Tokyo area and the breakfast menus (morning menus) we ate there!

【Jiyugaoka】Tajima Bakery Jiyugaoka serves cobbler bread reminiscent of school lunches during the Showa period 🥖.(パンの田島 自由が丘店)

Hearing that a menu that evolved from the old-fashioned coppepan🥖 was being offered, I went to the Tajima Bakery Jiyugaoka(パンの田島 自由が丘店) in Jiyugaoka.

Visit the restaurant

We arrived at the store at 8:00 AM (opening time) on a Saturday morning. There was no line and we were the first to arrive. However, there were two groups of take-out customers right after us and one group of in-store customers about 15 minutes after we entered the restaurant.
It is quite popular on weekend mornings.

The restaurant has about 20 seats at the counter and tables, and is decorated in a style reminiscent of an elementary school (wooden) during the Showa period. The waitstaff wore uniforms like the kappogi of school lunch attendants.

This is the menu that was offered on the day of the event.

There was no morning menu. It would be better to order your own combination or choose from the following set menus.

  • 500 yen set (in the store: 509 yen)

    • A piece of bread of your choice (selected from ~250 yen bread...we assume)

      • Yakisoba with thick sauce

    • A piece of bread of your choice (selected from breads from 300 yen)
      • Tuna and chikuwa isobe-age (fried tuna and chikuwa)

      • Thick-sliced ham cutlet, teriyaki chicken
      • Chicken Nanban with tartar sauce

The drink choices for the set menu were as follows

  • Hot coffee

Actual meal

This time, I had the 600 yen set inside the restaurant. I asked the waitress and she told me that "Ebi Katsu Tamago (shrimp cutlet and egg) is popular in the side dish bread".
*There were too many items on the menu to choose from.

They make the food after you order. There seems to be a slight time delay between ordering and serving, so I moved to my seat first and waited to be called.
My detailed impression is as follows.

  • Shrimp Katsu Tamago (Coppa Bread)
    • The thick sauce and mayonnaise are very strong. The taste reminds me of the bread I used to eat for lunch in high school. It looks just like the coppepan served at school lunch in elementary school, but this one is clearly tastier. Is it because it is freshly made?
  • French fries: Just regular French fries.
  • Cafe Latte (hot): A good cafe latte. The taste is as good as the shrimp cutlet and egg (cobbled bread).

This store seems to be an affiliate of Doutor Coffee. The Doutor logo was on the latte cup.

The concept of the restaurant was to serve old-fashioned koppeban in an atmosphere reminiscent of an elementary school (wooden school building) from the Showa period. The menu was written on a blackboard-like plate, and there were straw papers with the menu printed on them.
One full-size side dish of coppa bread was more than enough to fill me up. It was more than enough for breakfast. It was simply delicious. Various kinds of sweet koppe breads, "koppe melon bread" and "koppe raw doughnuts" are also of interest. I am especially interested in the "Fruit Mix Sandwich".
Next time I would like to go for tea in search of sweets.

Note

A couple of customers were having their bread cut in half and exchanging it with each other when they ordered. I see, this restaurant also does that if you ask them to do so.
I am very envious to be able to enjoy another menu item with a half-size portion. I wish I could do that too.
